A Big Grant for Big Laughs on Belmont: The Annoyance Receives Grant for Community Development from City of Chicago

If you live anywhere near Belmont, you probably already know The Annoyance Theatre. It’s the kind of place you stumble into on a random night and leave wondering why you don’t come here more often. It’s a go-to recommendation, a reliable laugh, and a big part of what gives the neighborhood its creative edge. So when the City of Chicago announced that The Annoyance was selected as one of just 45 projects citywide to receive a neighborhood improvement grant, it felt less like a surprise and more like a well-earned nod. Out of nearly 400 applications, this one stood out, and honestly, it’s easy to see why.

The Annoyance has been a Chicago comedy institution since 1987. Nearly four decades of original, weird, fearless comedy. It’s where absurd ideas are encouraged, big swings are taken, and new voices actually get a shot. One of its most famous shows, Co-Ed Prison Sluts, became the longest-running musical in Chicago theater history and helped cement The Annoyance’s reputation as a place that isn’t afraid to be bold, strange, or a little unhinged in the best way.

Today, that energy is still very much alive. The Annoyance runs shows nearly every night of the week, from improv and sketch to original plays and musical improv. It hosts open mics, workshops, and classes for performers at every level, creating a space where people can experiment, learn, and find their voice. It’s not just a theater you visit once, it’s a place people return to again and again.

The Annoyance is a hub for nighlight on Belmont Avenue. It brings people out on weeknights and weekends, keeps foot traffic flowing, and helps nearby restaurants and bars stay busy. People come for a show and stick around. That steady activity is exactly what makes a commercial corridor feel alive instead of quiet or sleepy. That’s why this grant makes sense. Out of nearly 400 applications, The Annoyance was selected as one of just 45 projects citywide to receive a “small grant” award through the City’s Community Development and Neighborhood Opportunity Fund programs. These grants prioritize places that are ready to invest back into their communities and have a proven neighborhood impact. This is truly an investment in a space that has spent decades showing up for Chicago, supporting artists, and making Belmont a little louder, funnier, and more interesting.

We’re thrilled to see The Annoyance get this kind of support and excited to see what’s next for one of Lakeview East’s most beloved venues for laughs.
