The City Doesn’t Fund These Fests—You Do

Every year, Lakeview East transforms into one giant dance floor, beer garden, and open-air concert venue. From the thump of live music at Belmont-Sheffield to the beautiful artist tents at the Festival of the Arts, our streets come alive with the kind of energy you just can’t buy…
Except, well—you kinda can.

Here’s the thing most people don’t realize: our street festivals aren’t city-funded. Not a dime. No magical fest fairy floats in and sets up the stages, orders the porta-potties, or cleans up after the conga lines disappear. That’s all us, your local Chambers, your neighborhood nonprofits, your business associations. And we do it because we believe in building community, supporting small businesses, and keeping our neighborhoods as the vibrant, welcoming, slightly rowdy place we all call home.

And yes, we know—every summer there’s that one article reminding folks that gate donations aren’t “required.” It’s true: you can walk right in without paying. But just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Think of it like tipping your bartender or tossing a few bucks into a street performer’s guitar case. It’s not mandatory, but it is what keeps our street festivals alive—and trust us, porta-potties, security, and great live music don’t come free.

Festival costs are rising. Donations at the gate are dropping.

And that, friends, is a recipe for a summer with way fewer local food vendors, tribute bands and everything that makes festivals the heartbeat of Summertime Chicago.

So Why Donate?

Because your $10 keeps the music playing.

It pays for security, stage crews, garbage pickup, family activities, and the incredible performers that turn an ordinary weekend into something magical.

Because festivals support our small businesses.
They bring foot traffic to local shops, patios to our restaurants, and customers to our favorite weird little gift stores. The money raised helps us throw more events, promote local makers, and keep our neighborhood full of life.

Because where else can you drink a local beer, pet a dog in sunglasses, and hear a Prince cover—all on the same block?

What’s Next?

We’re not going anywhere—but we do need your help.
This summer, when you hit up your favorite fest, we’re asking you to donate at the gate.
Tap your card. Drop some cash. Tell your friends. Be a Gatekeeper of the Good Times.

Because the truth is, we don’t just throw these festivals for you—we throw them with you. And we want to keep dancing in the streets for years to come.

Sign the petition, tell your friends to sign the petition, and save our street fests!

About Save Our Street Fests

The Save Our Street Fests initiative is a citywide effort powered by local Chambers and nonprofits who work year-round to make these incredible festivals happen. We’re here to remind folks that these events aren’t bankrolled by the city—they’re funded by the community. That means your donations at the gate don’t just support the music, food, and fun—they keep the heart of our neighborhoods beating all summer long. Want to learn more or chip in online?
