Learn More About This Years Shelters
Anti Cruelty
Founded in 1899, Anti-Cruelty is Chicago’s oldest and largest, private, Open Door animal welfare organization. For over 125 years, Anti-Cruelty has worked at the intersection of animal welfare and social well-being to provide the BEST Care for Animals, People, and in Communities. With a mission of building a healthy and happy community where pets and people thrive together, our programs offer a multi-faceted approach to strengthening the Human-Animal bond by increasing access to adoptions, veterinary care, community outreach services, humane education, and more, serving 20,000 pets and people annually.
One Tail At a Time
One Tail at a Time works to end pet homelessness by making pet ownership a joyful and accessible experience for all. They achieve this by rescuing animals from overcrowded shelters, placing them in loving forever homes, and providing support and resources to pet owners in need.
Chicago Canine Rescue
Chicago Canine Rescue has saved the lives of over 8,000 dogs, helping each one find a loving forever home. Many of these animals were once automatically euthanized at area shelters, but today, Chicago Canine Rescue offers them a second chance. The organization focuses on the most vulnerable dogs in the city—those slated for euthanasia due to age, injury, disability, or simply being overlooked by adopters at other shelters.
Deeply committed to every dog that enters its care, Chicago Canine Rescue provides ongoing support until the perfect family is found. While they are one of many rescues in the city, the organization believes their dogs are truly one in a million—and they remain devoted to leaving no dog behind.
Border Tails Rescue
Border Tails Rescue’s mission is to eliminate the need for euthanasia of homeless dogs by providing shelter and arranging loving homes for adoptable dogs. They achieve this through partnerships with animal service facilities locally, nationally, and internationally—including collaborations with organizations in Mexico and other underserved areas. In addition, Border Tails Rescue works to reduce the overpopulation of homeless dogs through education, community outreach, and a dedicated spay and neuter program.
Chicago Rescue Authority
Chicago Rescue Authority’s mission is to create a compassionate world where every animal is treated with love, respect, and dignity. The organization is committed to educating the public about the harmful realities of the mass-production industry for puppies, promoting responsible pet adoption and ownership, and actively working to reduce the overpopulation of dogs in shelters.
South Suburban Humane Society
The South Suburban Humane Society (SSHS) incorporated in 1970 as a small group of volunteers who brought homeless pets into their homes and worked to find them permanent homes. From those humble origins, we grew to a 501c3 nonprofit organization operating a 19,000 square foot animal resource campus in Matteson, IL that takes in more than 4,000 pets annually, a Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic, a Low-Cost Veterinary Services Clinic, and a variety of far-reaching community services. The SSHS annually impacts 20,000 pets and the people who love them through these programs.
Mutts of the Midway
Mutts of the Midway is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dog rescue organization based on the southwest side of Chicago. As a foster-based rescue, Mutts of the Midway does not operate a physical facility; instead, it relies on a compassionate network of foster families who provide safe, loving homes to dogs while they await their forever families.
The organization is powered by a dedicated community of fosters, adopters, donors, volunteers, and supporters—all united by the belief that every dog deserves a home. Mutts of the Midway welcomes anyone who shares this mission to join in making a difference.
