“The Medallion” commands attention with its impressive scale, stretching 50 feet high and 30 feet wide. E. Lee’s artistic vision comes alive through vibrant colors, intricate details, and powerful symbolism, taking viewers on a visual journey.
Situated on the historic building at 3121 N Broadway, “The Medallion” not only captivates with its artistic prowess but also carries the weight of the building’s rich history. Originally constructed in 1928 as a six-story parking garage, the structure has undergone an extraordinary transformation.
John Mengel, of JSM Venture, purchased the building in 2016 with a vision to repurpose it into a 72-unit apartment complex while preserving its historic elements. The challenge lay in maintaining the structural integrity while introducing new floors. As a result, the lower two floors of the original garage were retained, and new apartment floors were added on top.
Behind the rediscovered 1928 façade, a captivating blend of old and new emerges. The Art Deco features of the building have been lovingly restored, paying homage to Lakeview East’s architectural heritage. “The Medallion” mural, created by E. Lee, is inspired by the art deco medallions discovered under the building’s façade, celebrating the neighborhood’s artistic spirit and cultural diversity.

“The Medallian” has quickly become a beloved landmark, embodying the neighborhood’s inclusive spirit and serving as a testament to the transformative power of art in public spaces. It symbolizes the vibrant culture, artistic legacy, and the building’s remarkable journey in Lakeview East.
As you explore Lakeview East, take a moment to immerse yourself in the mesmerizing beauty of “The Medallion” and witness the profound impact of art in fostering community pride, connection, and the preservation of historic spaces.
